Sorry for indulging in a little bit of Dad-Joke practice! Jess and I are nearing the journey of pregnancy and by the time you are reading this we will have two babies at home, where I am assured everything will be calm and we’ll all be well rested. The experience has been pretty amazing for both of us, and the adventure of parenthood is one we cannot wait to embark on.
Jess and I have found being on the receiving end of health care to be a tremendously valuable experience and one we have learnt a lot from. While our system in Australia is far from perfect, it’s worth noting we are incredibly lucky to have the incredible healthcare system we have.
Through all of our appointments with various doctors, midwives and nurses, the biggest predictor of how we felt about the time with the healthcare professional has been how much they have allowed us to voice our concerns and opinions. The good ones give plenty of time and consideration to you and what your goals, worries, ambitions and thoughts are. The bad ones tell you what they think and are done with it.
Healthcare professionals by and large want one thing and one thing only: to help you. I know that is why I do what I do, and why all of our physios at Physique do what they do. We have a very privileged position to be able to guide and assist you through many different problems and concerns and it is something that gives us great joy.
The people who come to see me who often get the greatest results are the people who actively engage with my recommendations, ask questions and challenge me on my reasoning. I welcome questions and thoughts, as it means that the person in front of me is engaged with their health and wants to work to improve it. The doctors we have come across in our experiences are much the same – they enjoy it when there is genuine back and forth about their care.
Next time you are in the clinic with us, or at the doctor’s for your health, rest assured the best thing you can do is ask whatever is on your mind because it’s likely a great question and will only serve your best interests to ask it. I guarantee you that at Physique, your questions will be met with care, honesty and excitement because we love them!
