AVERTING TRAGEDY
AVERTING TRAGEDY
In 1997, two ski lodges and 18 people’s lives were lost in the Thredbo landslide that was caused by groundwater saturating the embankment.
In 2021, the residents of Riverstone Crossing locked horns with Stocklands developers and The Gold Coast City Council after their homes were destroyed in a landslide caused by the development building on top of a water course. (pictured)
And just last week, on the 21st of July 2023, geotechnical engineers hired by the Scenic Rim Regional Council said they struck water when conducting an investigation into the viability of a potential sale and development of the active landslide zone at 56-58 Coomera Gorge Drive, 4272.
In all three instances, the land was considered a “very high hazard” from the outset, but on Tamborine Mountain we still have a chance to learn from the tragic precedents of Thredbo and Riverstone Crossing, and avert catastrophe.
The potential sale and development of 56-58 Coomera Gorge Drive must stop. Our homes and our lives are at stake. At the very least, no one wants their properties to be devalued by ill-advised construction. It is too high a risk that any development of this block will reroute the existing course of groundwater and therefore destabilise the existing homes surrounding this land. We already know that groundwater activity is common and soil erosion is visibly present up to within a few metres of the road. Multiple slips on this land have occurred within living memory.
We call on the Scenic Rim Regional Council to act in the interests of the public they are employed to serve, stop the investigation into the sale and development of 56-58 Coomera Gorge Drive (4272), and revert these active landslide blocks back to recreation and open space zones, as it was prior to 2020.
We don’t want tragedies like Thedbo or Riverstone Crossing happening on Tamborine Mountain. Please follow and share our pages at: Facebook / Instagram – Residentsof Coomeragorgedrive
