Under Council policy no name change of the Botanic Gardens can be agreed to by Council by resolution until after public consultation. You may not be aware that the report on signing the new Memorandum of Agreement with the Botanic Gardens Committee was made “Confidential to the Local Government” in August 2020. I made a Right to Information request to have part of the report released on 4 January 2021, as I thought it was in the public interest to know how this decision was made and other important information. It has taken over four months.
It was held up because a third party objected to its release, but it is now released unconditionally as a public document. Of Interest is the fact that Council was in discussion with the Botanic Gardens over a longish period, prior to the committee’s AGM, preferring that the name be changed to “Scenic Rim Botanic Gardens on Tamborine Mountain”. Please contact me if you want a copy. More on this topic at a future date.
