Column: Dogs - PROTECTION LAWS FOR DOGS
Yet we cannot help them from being owned and bred by anyone who wants to, like a piece of furniture. Hundreds of thousands of dogs are being euthanised each year in Australia, unwanted litters are very common.
It is not a human right to have a dog – it is a privilege, and just as vehicle drivers need a driver’s licence showing they have the knowledge and skills, so should the dog owner.
Western Europe has a different system of regulating dog ownership with less tragic outcomes for the animals and a larger human population; their system could at least be understood and considered in Australia. Or are we to end up like some states in the USA that cram up to 12 dogs in a gas chamber and gas them while they cry out for minutes; there are just so many abandoned dogs in the USA, around 70 million at October 2020 according to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).
