Column: Food for Thought - SPRING HAS SPRUNG
During the spring school holidays Mum would be at her wits’ end by 8am, so she would march us outside and simply close the door and say come home at lunch time. “What do we do now?” my youngest brother would ask. With three pairs of beady eyes all staring at me like seagulls eyeing off chips at the beach: “Well boys, let’s see if we can find some mulberries to eat!”
“YAY!” they would all cry in unison. “I’m going to climb the highest,” the cheeky youngest would say. So off we would go ¬- the motley crew of four to the local reserve a few kilometres away where there were five huge mulberry trees. As the season wore on, we had to go higher and higher for the sweet delicious berries, shooing away the lorikeets that also liked to forage for these lovely berries. We would eat them until our bellies burst and our hands and faces were stained crimson red. Much to Mum’s dismay.
When I think back to these times, I’m filled with happiness as there is something magical about picking fruit straight off the tree beau
