Column: Living with Dogs - ANIMAL JUSTICE PARTY
It was registered by the Australian Electoral commission in July 2011 and registered in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and the ACT. It currently holds seats in New South Wales and the ACT.
The party aims to give animals constitutional protection based on their sentience, as opposed to their instrumental value.
The current Federal Government has been bad for animals, by allowing suffering, cruelty and subsequent deaths from overcrowding and “accidents”. It has made no commitment for improvement. Quite the opposite - by the introduction of Ag-gag laws that would criminalise the work of whistleblowers who expose the cruelty that happens out of sight and out of mind.
The AJP recognises that change needs to proceed in stages and policies do not simply describe a vision for the future but the steps required to get there. Policies are grouped into three areas: humans/animals/environment. These are core areas.
