The dingo is currently classified as being endangered and threatened with extinction as there are no current conservation strategies that will reduce the rate of possible extinction.

Because identifying a pure dingo from wild dogs is considered by the various State authorities as difficult there are calls in some of them for culling. This is particularly so currently in Western Australia.

The Dingo arrived in Australia about 5000 years via Indonesian seafarers. They are believed to have originated from the Asian grey wolf.

There are three classes of dingos: white, black and tan. Aborigines were thought to have aided their spread throughout the country.

They were used as companions, hunting aids and bed warmers; some tribes revered the dingo spirit. In a domestic setting dingos can be friendly and affectionate.

They play an important role in the natural environment as top predator by suppressing overpopulations of herbivores, like kangaroos and introduced mesopredators such as foxes and feral cats. Th
