PUBESCENT DOGS (from around 6 to 18 months depending of the breed and size of the dog): They can be similar to a human teenager as they experience hormonal changes (especially if not neutered) and they often rebel against authority and test boundaries.

This is the age when many dogs are handed over to shelters because their owners find it hard to cope with their behaviour. Training that may have been progressing well may seem to have been forgotten. Selective deafness, chewing, mounting, jumping on and bounding people over are all common behaviours during and around puberty.

Rebellious stages pass quickly, especially if the carer ensures that the bond is a good and positive one. Again, we all need to try for calmness, patience and consistency. Dogs can pick up on our moods more than we realise. Remember, no dog is perfect – just like us.
