Living with dogs: Dogs, Babies and Children
The recent tragic death of a 14 month old girl in Victoria being mauled by the family dog is the second child death from a dog attack this year in Australia.

The Victorian dog attack occurred in the kitchen, a food source area for the dog and it is likely the dog displayed behaviour or body language to warn of its intentions.

People and especially parents need to keep in mind that all dogs are predatory animals that rely on instinct rather than reason, even though domestication has made them loyal, intelligent and affectionate members of the family.

If children and dogs cannot be watched constantly and supervised by adults they should be separated and never left alone. Some dogs are more possessive about food and toys than others.

Dogs may not know that children are little humans as children are distinctly different from adults by their size, the way they move, the sounds they make and the way they smell. To the dog, a baby or child can be an entirely different
