Column: Living with Dogs - PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF AMIMALS
Described as the most successful radical organisation that started in America and is active in many other countries, their protests are ‘eye catching’.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) promotes veganism and opposes aquariums, circuses, hunting, and some fishing techniques.

They oppose the use of fur and leather and animals used for medical and substance research. Their slogan is “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment or abuse in any other way.”

Founded in 1980 as an animal rights organisation and based in Norfolk, Virginia, PETA is led by Ingrid Newkirk, the current international president. A non-profit organisation with nearly 400 employees it claims to have 6.5 million members and supporters (I am one). PETA claims to be the largest animal rights group in the world.

They have 17 attorneys in the foundation’s legal department, ensuring PETA’s researchers are provided with access to public records, that activists can hand out leaflets and demonstrate,
