Column: Living with Dogs - THE PROS AND CONS OF DOG PARKS
Marc Bekoff, a dog lover and professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology, has published more than 30 books on animal behaviour. He has spent many hours at various dog parks, just observing.

He discusses “citizen science” where the observations of people who share their lives with dogs can support and supplement rigorous data from detailed scientific studies. In the future citizen scientists will generate useful datasets that test hypotheses and answer questions as a complement to conventional laboratory techniques used to study dog psychology.

We are lucky to have two dog parks on Tamborine Mountain and they can be a great place for owners of dogs when their dog needs extra exercise and socialising with canine friends and people. I believe there are regular and familiar groups of dogs that meet and play together happily – the dog park ideal. Yet just as often, one can see unhappy, anxious dogs and dogs being targeted by playground bullies and dog fights.
