Christmas can be a season of mixed feelings. ‘Joy to the World’ is difficult to sing for someone recently grieving the loss of a loved one or suffering serious health or financial problems.

Christmas, a time when we are encouraged to ‘feel’ closer to God, can actually be a time when we feel further from God. Our expectations of ourselves often fail to be realised. Our personal goals remain unmet. Or maybe our expectations of God have not panned out the way we thought they should, so we back off, unsure of what he is up to in our lives.

The Apostle John says some interesting things in his ‘Christmas story’ about our sense of distance or closeness to God. John doesn’t so much write about the circumstances of Jesus’ birth (like Matthew and Luke), but he writes more about the reasons why God became man in the first place.
