I recently came across an ancient and beautiful verse from the Psalms.

‘Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.’

It’s found in Psalm (song) 85 in the Old Testament.

In it the psalmist is expressing his wonder at the way the universe is made.

He doesn’t see a chance configuration of atoms hurling through space and time out of which this thing we call mankind springs. He doesn’t see a brazen heaven that is eternally silent or an invisible fate that mocks his sense of significance.

The psalmist sees in the world the expression of a righteous, true and loving God. He sees it in the good things that come from the earth. The crops and plants that provide good food show that God is faithful in providing for his people.

From the earth he lifts his eyes to the heavens and knows that a God who is right in what he does and true in all his ways is looking down upon the earth and governing its ways. The psalmist is thankful as he sings his praise to God.
