Column: Pastor Kim - BECAUSE OF HIS MERCY
No, what happened was far more subtle but much more powerful and significant for the human race. God became man. God became man to bear our sins and sorrows. He became man to reveal himself to us as the ultimate expression of the love of God. He took on flesh and blood so that in his humanity he might present himself as a sacrifice of atonement. That is, he paid the outstanding debt of death that we as people have accrued through our failure to love God and to love others as we ought. We, as a race have fallen short of the glory of God which we were created to reflect in our lives.
When God became man, he identified with us and revealed himself to us for the ultimate purpose of accomplishing a salvation that was tailored for the complexities of human nature and behaviour. He has taken on himself the sin and suffering that characterise our lives. He sympathised and empathised with us, and took on our burdens of life and our final burden of death.
As the prophet Isaiah said,
‘Surely he took up our infirmitie
