Column: Pastor Kim - THE WORD BECAME FLESH
At Christmas time we focus on Jesus, the baby in the manger. What an understated beginning for he who came from heaven! Yet it could be no other way. Any other created being like a tree or an animal could not bring about the kind of salvation that we need as humans. It was a real human being that was required, someone like us and yet without the stain of moral failure in a universe where good and evil exist. ‘For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.’ (Hebrews 4:15)
Jesus needed to ‘prove himself’ in the crucible of suffering without breaking God’s commands (like Adam did and you and I do). How different from the way we suffer. We can argue with God, say he’s unjust, question his love for us, find solace in sin and even reject him. But his Son, who suffered in three years what most of us won’t endure in a lifetime, learned obedience and ‘proved himself’ to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. ‘I
