In 2007, the Washington Post conducted an experiment at a Metro station in Washington D.C. An incognito busker performed for 45 minutes while 1097 commuters passed by. Seven people momentarily paused to listen. He collected a total of $32. The busker was Joshua Bell, one of the world’s greatest musicians. He played on the world’s most expensive violin worth US$4 million. His music selection was identical to his performance at a sold-out Boston theatre two nights prior where tickets had cost more than a hundred dollars.
One thousand and ninety people failed to notice or appreciate the gift given to them that day. Their attention was focussed on other matters and they were robbed of a rare opportunity.
