Column: Relationships - CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
The weather was unbearably hot in stark contrast to the cold and often snowy Christmases spent with friends and extended family. In fact, there was little resemblance to the familiar festive seasons I grew up with. The night of Christmas Eve we turned on the television and watched our first Myer Music Bowl Christmas Carols. I watched with delight, singing along until “We wish you a Merry Christmas” brought everyone on stage. Finally, it felt like Christmas! Since that time, every Christmas Eve over the past 40 plus years the television is turned on and the sound of carols fill our home.
Traditions provide us with a degree of stability, comfort and security. They are the main ingredient of happy childhood memories and are often passed down through generations. There is even research that suggests that family traditions promote better emotional adjustment in children. If you grow up in a family with strong rituals, you're more likely to be resilient as an adult.
