The balance between being too dependent and being too self-sufficient is interdependence. Interdependent people are those who are independent enough that they do not find it threatening to depend on others or let others depend on them. Interdependent people recognise the all-important difference between healthy dependency and unhealthy dependency.
Unhealthy dependence occurs when you depend on someone to do for you anything that is your personal responsibility. For example, if you depend on someone else to make you feel good about yourself you will find only temporary relief because no one can provide you with self-esteem. If you compromise your personal standards and integrity to give in to another’s demands, you are in an unhealthy dependency. If you fear that you would not survive on your own and feel incapable of self-sufficiency, then you are a candidate for unhealthy dependency.
Only an independent person can enter into a relationship of interdependence. The more secure you are, the more you can risk
