Column: Relationships - LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF IN THE MIDST OF A CRISIS
You can’t plan for a life crisis. It arrives without warning, plunging you into confusion and chaos. An unanticipated situation - whether circumstantial, relational, health related - can leave you feeling disorientated. Your future plans are suddenly obsolete, and you have no idea what you’ll be doing tomorrow, next week, next year. Your thoughts can slide into turmoil as you try to process the event’s impact on how you expected your life would turn out.
In a time of crisis, it is helpful to focus on the here and now rather than the future. You can’t change what has happened and you can’t be certain what will happen tomorrow so focus your energy on right now, where you have some control. Once your attention is on the present moment, decide what you need to do to get through the next few minutes. Set yourself very small and specific steps.
