The Gottman institute in the United States has been studying couple relationships for almost four decades and while these principles focus on couple relationships, they are also helpful keys that can be applied to improving our relationships in general.
The first principle is Enhancing Your Love Maps. What does this mean? Many couples fall into the habit of inattention to the details of their spouse’s life. In the busyness of life, information is gathered on a need-to-know basis. One or both partners may have only a slight sense of the other’s joys, likes, dislikes, fears, stresses. In contrast, emotionally intelligent couples are intimately familiar with each other’s world and have made room in their brain to store all relevant information about their partner’s life. This intimate knowledge is called a Love Map.
