Pretty soon the high standards you set for yourself begin to slip. The perfect life you had planned for your child is no longer a reality. Feelings of inadequacy become a constant presence. Guilt seems to be an intrinsic part of parenting. Much of the guilt that parents feel can't be tied to specific actions or issues; it's just a vague sense that you're doing everything just a little bit wrong. The reason you feel guilty is because you care – it comes with being a loving parent. It’s important, however, to keep guilt in check. Self-compassion can help you achieve a balance of caring while also being realistic and keeping perspective.
Think about how much you unconditionally love your children even when they make mistakes. Then start to apply some of that love and kindness to yourself. You are not going to get it right all the time so give yourself some slack and notice what you are doing well. Don’t compare yourself with the image that other parents project.
