We can be influential only if we accept influence. Simply put, it comes down to honouring and respecting each other and valuing what each brings to the relationship – and to your life together. It’s conveying to your partner that their opinions and feelings matter to you and giving consideration to those opinions and feelings before making decisions. Successful and happy couples actively search for common ground rather than insisting on getting their way.
Research has discovered that there was a gender difference in how men and women approach a difference of opinion. A long-term study of 130 couples found that 65 per cent of men tended to dig in and insist on doing things their way rather than taking on board their partner’s perspective. Women, however, were more open to considering their mate’s viewpoint. This is attributed to the conditioning of boys who participate in competitive play, developing a win/lose attitude to life in general.
