So, this edition I thought I’d go on a little public service announcement about CMV and how you can prevent it. One positive from the COVID-19 pandemic is that we as a society are all far more conscious about hand hygiene and most people carry hand sanitiser now, so hopefully this will be of interest but not likely to change any habits since everyone is now so excellent at hand hygiene.
CMV is a herpes virus that is more common than listeriosis, toxoplasmosis and rubella. Most pregnant women are already aware that they should not change the cat litter when they’re pregnant due to the risk of toxoplasmosis, and to wash fruit and vegetables and thoroughly cook meat, reducing risks of toxoplasmosis and listeriosis, but CMV is rarely discussed in much depth.
If you get CMV, your symptoms are fairly non-specific – fever, malaise, flu-like symptoms. This means that many people, around 50 per cent have had a past infection. Those highest at risk are people who are around young children because the most common route
