Column: The Mtn Midwife - NON-INVASIVE PRENATAL TESTING
Sometimes there are so many tests recommended that you can forget to ask what you are being tested for or why, or even think to follow up on the results.
Recently there have been many women presenting to hospital having had Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) and either not having appropriate follow-up tests or not understanding why they had it done. So, this week I thought it would be a good idea to go through what it is and why it is recommended, and also what to do after the results. It’s a big and delicate topic for a small column, so I will try to be as succinct as possible.
Firstly, you do not need to have a NIPT. It is a relatively new test that is valuable for women who are at high risk of having a baby with Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome), Trisomy 13 (Patau Syndrome), or Trisomy 18 (Edwards Syndrome). You may wish to know this to prepare for the child, to do invasive testing, or you may consider ending the pregnancy based on that information.
