Column: Travelling Places - HOW TRAVEL HAS CHANGED OVER THE PAST 50 YEARS
With all the spare time we have to hand I have been sorting out some old paper work and came across my BOAC Junior Jetclub book – complete with stamps from age two weeks old when I returned to Northern Nigeria with my two brothers and parents to our home not far from the Sahara. Ever since I have been thinking about how travel has changed in the last 50 odd years.

Back in the old days British Airways was known as BOAC or Better on a Camel; Air France as Air Chance; KLM Royal Dutch Airlines as Kisses, Love and Marriage; Pan Am as Prang Am… and on the list goes. These were the days before mass travel.

We moved to Australia in the early sixties and continued to return ‘home’ as England was known, every couple of years for family holidays. When I was six, we sailed past the still to be completed Sydney Opera House, across the expansive harbour and through the heads to the open ocean.

Our five-week journey visited exotic locations. stopping at several of the enchanting Pacific islands. I’ve never forgotten sail
