Sitting astride the Swan River, Perth is a great starting point. Take a guided walking tour through its heart to learn about its history and how it has emerged as a modern cosmopolitan city. Glide upstream to a Swan Valley winery for lunch, head out to the Indian Ocean beaches to catch spectacular sunsets. Or head to nearby Rottnest Island for a day trip or linger longer for a couple of nights – walk the trails, swim in secluded bays, go snorkelling and dolphin watching, visit the history museum and encounter the native quokkas that roam the island.
Head south, stopping at Mandurah for lunch – perhaps explore the canals and back waters by boat. Continue down the Rainbow Coast calling in to see Busselton jetty built over 150 years ago; at a remarkable 1.8km it is the second longest jetty in the world.
