Column: WINE CHAT - A WEEKEND IN ITALY
Australia, however, is starting to traverse a void when it comes to Italian wines. More and more commonly, the vineyards of Australia are being planted with the likes of Sangiovese, Vermentino, Nebbiolo, and Fiano. The list certainly doesn’t stop there, with more than 3000 different varietals of vitis vinifera being traced back to the hillsides of Italian vineyards. This certainly makes Italy one of the powerhouse countries for classic wine production, traditional values and techniques, and home to some of the most famous and rarest wines in the world.
So why are we only just starting to discover some of these Italian varieties? The answer lies in the demand for diversity. This diversity is in large part being driven by changes in consumer tastes but also by climate change as viticulturalists look for varieties that can survive and flourish in increasingly warmer growing conditions.
