Column: Wine Chat - BEHIND THE BOTTLE
While most of us can agree that a good old goon-bag or a canned rosé spritz has its time and place, the glass bottle - traditional, time-honoured, and elegant - remains by far and away the winemaker’s favoured choice. But why is this? What’s the story behind the bottle?
Ancient civilisations often kept wine in wooden barrels or heavy clay containers, called amphoras. Many centuries later, burgeoning international trade and the advent of industrialisation meant there was heightened demand for small, convenient, and portable receptacles in which to store wine after barrel-ageing. Since the seventeenth century, wine has most commonly been kept in glass bottles as they are relatively cheap and lightweight (as opposed to wood or ceramics). Moreover, glass bottles can be readily sealed with a cork or cap, which leaves the flavour of the wine itself unadulterated.
