Column: Yoga - METTA: LOVING KINDNESS MEDITATION
Metta is one of the Brahma Viharas of yoga which are: loving kindness, joy, compassion and equanimity. Metta can also be described as benevolence, goodwill, kindness, or love without clinging.
The Metta or LKM meditation asks the student to cultivate benevolence in a progressive way. So, to practise we hold an image of a person or situation in front of our hearts and we wish them: good health, happiness, peace and freedom. Starting with an image of someone we love this is an easy thing to do. We then move onto extending our blessing towards a respected person; this is also quite easy to do. We then progress to blessing an image of ourselves (this is a bit harder) and then finally we use the ancient blessing to bless a person or situation we know we need to release and forgive from our lives (this is really hard). Finally, we can extend the blessing to the entire universe, which is beautiful.
