One of the cornerstones of Ayurveda is the importance of digestion. And it makes sense. If you have fabulous digestion you will absorb all the nutrients from your food and you will get maximum nourishment and support from your food choices. Poor digestion means that no matter how good our food choices are, we fail to get the most from our diet.
We can even have undigested food which can build up in the body as a toxic sludge which the Ayurvedics call ama. Western medical science supports this notion: a poor digestive system and poor elimination can result in type of bile sludge build-up in the tissues of the body and a sticky, toxic waste build up in a constipated bowel. And in Ayurveda, beyond the physical body, your digestive fire is a good indicator on how you digest all the challenges of your life. You either process, learn from, and eliminate these challenges or are overwhelmed
