JAPAN
A few years ago, I had the pleasure to join Australian company Botanica (part of the APT group) on a wonderful journey around the top of Scotland, visiting exquisite gardens with a Botanical guide. I enjoy gardens but I am not a keen gardener, however I love the beautiful settings and the stories behind them. Some of these gardens were manicured and others wild and windblown. All of them had in common a wonderful outdoor setting and the opportunity to explore the history and culture of the area we were travelling through. Some of our fellow travellers were fanatical gardeners, most had an interest while some weren’t that keen on gardens at all, and spent their time focusing on the other aspects of the trip. All were delightful travel companions.
Of all the Asian destinations that Australians flock to, our office is finding more interest in travelling to Japan than other countries in the region. Botanica offers some wonderful journeys for Cherry Blossom and also for the autumn colours.

Admire the distinctive and alluring aspects of Japan’s seasons. Visit the Land of the Rising Sun in autumn, and again in spring, taking advantage of the benefits that each season has to offer. During each journey, you will see the highlights of this captivating country, in the renowned cities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Each itinerary also offers the chance to see little-known gems lying off the beaten track. Your expert Botanical Guides will ensure you learn the stories and meaning behind each garden’s design and its place within Japan’s enchanting history. And, on each journey, you will travel in a small group of between 15 and 25 people.

Join well known Australian Botanical guide Simon Rickard this autumn for a 12-day journey, Japanese Culture, Art and Gardens in Autumn Splendour. Your small group will travel by bullet train and coach and stay in some lovely locations. Starting 7th November 2022 or 6th November 2023. Admire Japan’s vibrant red, yellow and orange autumn leaves. Stay in quality hotels and a traditional Japanese ryokan. Visit world-famous Kenroku-en and Koraku-en gardens. See Meiji Shrine and learn about Japanese traditions. Explore Himeji Castle and the golden Kinkaku-ji
Perhaps you are more interested in a spring sojourn, Cherry Blossoms, Culture and Sights of Japan? This 14-day trip will be guided by Toby Musgrave, and this small group will witness a maiko performance during a private dinner in Kyoto and visit the ethereal Ryoan-ji, Japan’s most famous Zen garden.

You will also explore Matsue, the ‘City of Water’ and the island garden of Yuushien.

If a glorious botanical trip doesn’t appeal but you would still love to visit beautiful Japan, then there are lots of other options to consider, perhaps cruise around the coastline, join an escorted walking tour, join a small group more focused on history and culture. Do come and chat to us for ideas and suggestions.
