VISIT MAGICAL WORLDS IN LATEST SHOWING AT UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE
A new exhibition of Catherine Macauley’s sculpture and paintings opens on Saturday 2 March at Under the Greenwood Tree Bookshop & Contemporary Art Gallery. Alice in Wonderland, mermaids, court jesters, jugglers and medieval maidens are just some of the subjects for her exhibition.
Catherine’s artwork transports us to past eras and magical worlds – from the early Renaissance to mythology and fairy tales. Her unique sculptures and paintings feature women from past eras, characters from classic books, and create imagery that seems vaguely familiar and often surprisingly comforting.
Hand built in clay and mixed media, her figures are brought to life through their rich colouration, textures and Catherine’s unique handmade glazes. These signature glazes, developed over many years of study in glaze technology, and much trial and error, elevate the works to another level.
Drawing, particularly the human figure, has always been a precursor to Catherine’s sculptures and now provides a natural progression to her painting, adding another dimension to this exhibition.
Catherine has exhibited extensively over the past 20 years, been the recipient of numerous awards and held several exhibitions in Regional Galleries, including her “Alice Exhibition” at Gatakers Artspace Fraser Coast Regional Council Community Gallery in 2020.
Meet Catherine at her exhibition on Saturday 2nd March from 3pm. The exhibition continues until March 28th at Under the Greenwood Tree.
