WHO CARES FOR THE CARER
WHO CARES FOR THE CARER
Carers provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental health condition, chronic condition, terminal illness, or who are frail and aged.
Anyone can become a Carer if the need arises. Carers make an enormous contribution to our communities and hence to our state and national economies. We need to appreciate them for their dedicated and selfless service towards those who need it.
So, who cares for the Carer?
Some ways to support a Carer are:
·      BE PRESENT AND REAL
Be proactive and invite them for a ‘cuppa’ and let them know you have the time and that you're there to listen to them. Remember, it’s your wholehearted presence which helps the Carer feel “heard” and get access to some respite from their caring routine.
·      CHANGE THE TOPIC/SCENE
Sometimes offer to talk about something different if they need a break from the topic of Caring, or just get out of the house for a short walk together. Change is always refreshing.
·      GENTLY DIRECT CARER TO CONSOLIDATE THEIR SENSE OF SELF
Mention to the Carer that the role that they play is valuable. One has to first be in good overall health in order to look after someone else. Regular exercise, meals and sleep are essential, as is taking part in enjoyable activities/hobbies, and spending time with friends.
·      ADVISE CARER OF CARER GATEWAY FOR SUPPORT
CARER GATEWAY is a national online and phone service providing practical information and resources to support Carers. www.carergateway.gov.au
